Them!

The most original title or a giant ant flick!
Ah the fifties! The great age where Godzilla first destroyed Tokyo, a time where giant monsters were being born from atom bombs. This monster or should I say monsters are here in our own backyard. Yep that's right, ants! Giant ants that build colonies and fly into ships at sea just so they can eat our savory skins.
With an oh so original title Them is a pretty decent giant monster flick. Actually it doesn't even seem to start out that way which really drew my attention because I don't believe I ever saw a film that started out like a beginning to a detective story.  With a creepy girl and a murderer loose killing for sugar it was eventual that we would meet the ants. However for the first half or so we barely see them and it is treated like a mystery genre which I really appreciated since I'm a huge mystery fan, but also gives a breathe of fresh air into a very formulaic genre.
Sadly that quickly changes once the characters kill the first nest. After that the FBI take over and like every cop drama you see on TV today (really tv? you haven't changed the FBI shtick in 50 years??) the FBI start taking over, sending innocent men in jail or the loony bin to shut them up and automatically want to go in guns a blazin! Which is where the movie started to lose me. It was probably fine since WWII was most likely still fresh in peoples mind back then and they did trust their government and military, but it starts to get old for a modern day audience, especially when it is reused in everyday drama.
But like a doctor here for a cure whenever the ants appear it gets awesome. The ants themselves are really well made. They are not too life like and not too fake which makes for a good time. Invading the second nest had a few tense scenes that were very enjoyable and it was cool watching the old professor teach the military about ants, showing them a documentary of sorts that had close ups of the ants making them look all creepy. As sci-fi goes this is pretty good, and if you ever want to relax to a nice B monster movie put this on I'm sure there aren't too many people who would say it was awful.

RECOMMENDATION: Medium
