Surprisingly the actual reveal of the creature was really the only time we saw him. Interesting.
The Fly, which is mostly Sci-Fi features some of the most disturbing scenes that I wouldn't even think they would show. They were obviously fake, but nevertheless the concept behind a few scenes in this film were really disturbing.
I have to admit, the beginning was a little slow. It starts off as a detective mystery film actually. A murder, questions, a murderess. It's not until thirty minutes in that we jump back in time and really get to know what happens with Andre and his wife. The chemistry those two actors had were amazing, you felt like their love was true and nothing could ever separate the two. Then just like any good creature/monster movie, the beauty and the beast element pops in.
Andre is being feared by his wife from his transformation. For the 50s the special effects were pretty good, the make up for the creature face and arm were really well done and creepy, especially when the fly mouth kept twitching. For what they could do back then it really shows how amazing this is, and their script was solid enough to really make you care more the longer you watched it.
What I loved about this film is that once the accident happens to Andre he can't speak anymore. The scenes with him having a blanket over his face were really great. I loved watching the actor convey everything through his body alone. Especially when he was fighting inside himself, the man vs animal scenes really showed and even though his face was covered most of the time you can just feel his pain and sorrow ooze from the screen. Another thing I though was impressive was that it seems that they used real flies is the fly scenes. It's really impressive that they were able to shoot what they wanted with real flies. I'm only assuming they were real, I'm not a 100% sure, but it was more impressive than a CGI fly doing it's thing in the modern era. Overall this is a great Sci-Fi film and even though it does fill the requirements of a creature feature, it just was more than a creature feature. It's a film that I think everyone would like, definitely not as monstrous as the remake.
RECOMMENDATION: Medium
