Good Reads: Let the Right One In

A story about vampires in Sweden. A mesmerizing tale that will make you think that there are still really good stories to write about vampires other than twilight!
The first time I ever experience Let the Right One In, by John Ajvide Lindqvist, was through it's Swedish film by the same name. If you think the vampire genre has been beaten over the head so many times that there isn't any originality to them anymore think again! While this film doesn't do anything "new" to the vampire mythos it certainly brings something new to the characters that surround the vampire.
The main character for the most part is a 12 year old boy who keeps getting bullied. He meets a girl "around his age" and tries to befriend her. From their the story is major character driven. The book goes around three view points: Oscar (12 yr old boy), Virginia (an innocent who is experiencing changing into a vampire), and Hakan (the helper to the vampire). Each story makes you flinch from all the pain the characters are going through. From Oscar trying to defend himself from bullies to Virginia experiencing the "culture shock" of vampire-hood.
This book is very graphic and has some very unpleasant themes like pedophilia. This is not a read for someone who doesn't want a very detailed story that may repulse them. This is also a romance book, but I'd say that it's not heavily portrayed, but definitely you can feel it.
If your looking for something chilling to read this Halloween why don't you try this or watch the movie. If your not into watching a Swedish movie with subtitles America remade it with Chloe Grace Moretz, but be warned that it takes some stuff out from the Swedish version. But if you want the full story than what you get from the movies I say go pick up the book, you won't be disappointed.

RECOMMENDATION: High
