Phantom of the Opera

The 1925 Silent movie that will amaze and astound you featuring Lon Chaney in one of his most memorable make-ups!
This is a great silent film. It will keep your attention with all its amazing sets, story, and make-up. Lon Chaney is the Phantom! His make up made the audience of 1925 gasp and faint. Chaney creating his own make up for the character has had an impact on the Phantom of the Opera story and is possibly the most chilling make up from any Phantom film.
The underground scenes were just beautiful. It is so eerie and gothic that you wouldn't expect this disfigured man to be following you under the water trying to trap and kill you. What is spectacular about this film is the traps that the phantom laid for people. He traps two guys (one being the female leads love interest) after he captures the female lead. Tells the girl to pick between two levers; one will save her love, the other will blow up the opera house. This guy is so devious that you have to love the way he can back up his threat especially if he is trying to double cross her and trick her to make her his.
They even have an Edgar Allen Poe reference in this film where the Phantom is dressed up as the Red-Death. To top it off like any good opera the music is so lovely and amazing. It really pulls the movie forward giving it an even more deadly and scary vibe from it.
Overall this is a silent movie everyone should watch. Whether your a Phantom of the Opera fan, movie buff, or not even into silent films you should watch this one and gaze at the amazing set designs and a performance that terrified people.

RECOMMENDATION: High
