It's so good you need it twice! Back to the Lagoon where science sticks it's evil hands into the creature's home and terrorize him once again!
Wow! This film just shows why the creature is a force to be reckoned with. From the beginning it hits with an intense underwater action scene that makes your jaw drop. It's embarrassing that the 50s can do better underwater fights than the present. Whenever the creature escapes from his captives you just see him manhandling everyone! He is picking up and throwing people around, he's tipping cars out of his way, this film just showcases his strength.
This film is a successful sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon. It really vamps up the Sci-Fi factor with the scientists studying the captured creature. The creature is even more terrifying and creepy. He does the infamous swim scene where he will swim underneath the actress being only maybe two feet away, much better than the first movie's scene. Great acting that really make this movie stand out and care about the characters. And Clint Eastwood even got his first acting role in this film.
Like the first film this one has amazing water scenes. Lots more action, mostly all underwater, that surprises me how intense they are. The underwater shots are definitely much more engaging and really pulls this film through. The first half to 5/8ths of the film is amazing and flawless (to a degree) but once the creature is running from people it slows down for me.
My biggest issue is the new costume. for the most part it's like the old one, but the head is where two major problems arise for me. The first one is the eyes. Those god awful egg eyes are hard to look at, and really different from the first film. The other problem was that the actor who was playing the creature during the underwater shots (Ricou Browning) had to wear the face that was fit to the land actor who had a bigger head so every time Ricou would let out some air the air bubbles would escape from the top of his head. These are just minor things but I still see them, and it takes away a little.
The thing I love the most about the Creature from the Black Lagoon was that it was basically a silent film, but with words. If you take away the words you would still be able to know what was going on. In Revenge they introduced a new system for the underwater scenes. They added a communication device so that we can hear the male lead and the female lead talk to each other while underwater observing the creature.
This film had a lot of eye candy. The actors were swimming in a tank with fish, eels, and sharks (oh and a turtle that tried to eat the creature's suit). And if you notice the reporter who pops up throughout the film to give us updates on the creature, in each scene he wears less and less clothing. Great chemistry between the main actors, Ricou swims beautifully in the underwater shots, the action scenes are superior to the first film's. We learn a lot more about about the creature (or a little more). If you are into sci-fi then I'd say check this out. Like the last film it is directed by Jack Arnold who directed a lot of sci-fi films including It came from outer space, the Creature films, Tarantula, and the Incredible shrinking man. Now for people who have seen this film do you think this is worthy as a sequel? What didn't you like?
RECOMMENDATION: Medium/High
