Come on, look at that poster, look at the actors, look at the creatures! All of it screams epic! Lon Chaney Jr VS Bela Lugosi, a heartfelt tale of awful luck to Larry Talbot. You get the best of both worlds (or in this case franchises!). Forget Marvel, this really makes you believe that these monsters are part of the same universe and their meet up was pretty natural.
The film can be divided into two sections. The revival and beginning of the Larry Talbot story, and the end and continuation of the Frankenstein monster's story. I find it interesting that the monster "survived" from being stuck in a block of ice. But it was very heart warming that Larry befriended the monster after all the hardships he had been through. Then the ending happened.....
Lugosi does a good job filling in the monster's role. You could easily tell that that the castle was a miniature, but it still felt great and cool to watch. I can only imagine what the audience back then thought of this film. I really liked it because it was more a Wolf Man film than a Frankenstein film, but it deepened the tragedy and the legacy of The Wolf Man and really showed that a were-wolf can be terrifying when immortal.
The fight was good, but cut short....I applaud Lon Chaney Jr for being that athletic jumping, climbing, and running trying to fight the monster. The human characters also had a good role and not uselessness. A doctor trying to help Larry turns into the second coming of Henry Frankenstein. Many people may not like this since the versus fight wasn't until the end, it was short, and cut off in the middle of it from a certain town's person. Now that I think of it maybe people back then didn't like it because it was sort of a tease....Either way I loved this film, for the reason that I expected the fight would turn out that way and I really liked the focus on the characters.
RECOMMENDATION: Medium/High
