Do you love monster movies? Creatures of the night that terrify you? Or you love the old classic monsters that started it all? My blog will be dedicated to all of that, covering the classics to all the new remakes. Once in a while I will talk about a book I think is a very great read concerning monsters, and eventually I would like to talk about monsters on television. Hopefully you'll like my blog and interact.

Big Ass Spider!
Big spider rampaging through your city? Who you gonna call? How about an exterminator, a hotel officer, and a military chick who knows her way around a gun. If your looking for a good scare, then this film isn't for you. Sure it has some "gruesome" images, but at the end of the day it is mostly a comedy. The story is stereotypical- military looses weapon, wrecks city, yada-yada-yada. However, this film takes that overused concept and embraces it. It says "yeah you seen this before, but we're gonna laugh along the way" and oh we do.
The chemistry between the exterminator and the police officer is great. You believe that in the short amount of time they became really buddy-buddy. Frankly, they both are sort of bone heads, but that's what makes them lovable. Those two have some of the best comedy bits in this whole movie. Once the female military love interest pops up, you even care for the exterminator to get the girl. The acting is perfect for this type of film, where they make it a perfect mix between cheesy and funny.
No, the spider does not start out big, it's actually small-ish at the beginning, then it gets bigger and bigger until King Kong will notice (and no, King Kong is not in this film, but boy wouldn't that be cool!) The CGI, like the acting, is perfect for the film. It's not as great as Chamber of Secret's or Lord of the Rings giant spider's, but it's enough for us to believe the actors are interacting with it, and campy enough to not make it a straight horror film. And man does that spider know how to rack up a body count!
When all is said and done, if your feeling bored or not sure what you want to do, maybe check this out. It will help you pass the time, and you get some laughs along the way. This film is very smart in knowing what it is, and that is the driving point I want to emphasize when recommending this. It's not one of those movies where I'd go out of my way and say "Yeah, Thursday night, Big Ass Spider time" but when in the right mood and the right time I'd highly say go for it.
RECOMMENDATION: Medium/High
