Pacific Rim

Now Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite film directors, and when I heard he was making a giant monster movie that is like a love letter to the Japanese giant monster films I knew I would love it, and I did. He promised to bring giant robots fighting giant monsters, and you know what? He gave us exactly that. Gorgeous giant monsters wrecking havoc being beaten to death by giant robots that would make any nerd pass out from nerding out.
Now I understand that a lot of people didn't like this film, but what were you expecting other than a monster vs robot movie??? Sure you can go deeper into the story, but that's not the reason why giant monster movies were fun, it was watching your favorite giant beat the snot out of another giant. The mechs in this film were awesome, and I am always astounded with how much detail del Toro put into his Jaegers and the Kaiju. If you watch the special features on the discs it is really fascinating how much detail he put into the film in general.
The characters, while not fully utilized, served their purpose and mainly focused on the main characters. It was cool watching them pilot the Jaegers as they had to be in sync, and their badass white suits. And let us not forget the great cameo by Ron Perlman. Like Avatar (the James Cameron one), Pacific Rim is an orgasm for the eyes. There is so much CGI going on, but you don't even register it as the great choreographed fight scenes make you sit on the edge of your seat.
While this film may not be for everyone, if your a fan of giant monster films like King Kong or Godzilla then this is a must watch. If your watching it for the first time your going to love it and die out of awesomeness that struck your eyes. However, the best way to watch the film is the first time viewing. After that it does feel like the film is missing something, but it is still an incredibly fun ride.

RECOMMENDATION: Medium/High
